Increasing International Student Representation at UBC
Student Union Representation Campaign
Our Demand: Introduce a new AMS Council Seat to represent the interests of International Students.
There is a lack of migrant student voices within the decision-making bodies at UBC. Our larger campaign will span over the next few years, identifying areas where international students have been left out. To begin this campaign, we are looking at our student union; the UBC Alma Mater Society (AMS).
The AMS is made up of 5 student executives and 32 council representatives, elected into their positions by the student body to represent student issues within the university, provincial, and federal level. There is no representative on the council that speaks up for the issues faced by international students. It is crucial that the work our student union is doing is intersectional, currently it is not.
In 2020, the Indigenous Committee, and council seat was introduced to amend a long standing mistake of exclusion. Migrant students however are continuing to be excluded from the room. The student union has a responsibility to function as a student union. International students make up 30% of the UBC community, we deserve a seat at the table. We will have our voices included!
